Push and Pull Processing

We can push process certain film types upon request, but push processing may add significant time to the turnaround depending on the film type and current lab schedule.

Push processing is a special request and must be selected or clearly requested when the order is placed. If push processing is not requested before the film is developed, it cannot be added afterward.

Pull processing

We do not normally offer pull processing at this time.

Pull processing may be considered on a case-by-case basis, but we need to know why the film needs to be pulled before accepting the request. Please contact us before sending film that requires pull processing.

Push processing is for fresh film only

Customer-requested push processing is not available for expired film, except in limited cases involving recently expired film from 2020 or later.

Expired film requires a different approach than fresh film. Our expired-film and rescue-lab workflows use specific developing methods designed to give old film the best practical chance of producing images. Changing those methods at the customer’s request can increase base fog, reduce image quality, or cause the film to fail completely.

If your film is expired, please order the correct expired film service and let us handle it using the process we believe gives it the best chance.

Please do not purchase old expired film, shoot it at box speed, and expect push processing to magically save it. In many cases, especially with older processes such as C-22, Kodachrome, or other legacy films, normal push processing is not possible. These films require rescue-lab handling, not standard push processing.

Our expired film service is primarily intended for film that was found after being shot years ago by you, a family member, or someone connected to the film. We understand that people sometimes buy expired film by mistake or do not realize what they have. If that happens, the best thing to do is be upfront with us, explain the situation, and allow us to use our best judgment.

We are much more able to help when a customer says, “I didn’t realize what this film was — please use your best judgment,” rather than asking us to force a specific process onto film that cannot safely or successfully be handled that way.

Push processing turnaround times

Push processing may add the following time to your order:

C-41 color film:
Adds approximately 2–3 weeks

Black-and-white film:
Adds approximately 1 week

ECN-2 film:
Usually adds no additional time

E-6 slide film:
Adds approximately 1–2 weeks, but may take longer

E-6 push processing is more complicated because time adjustments are required during the process. We prefer to do E-6 push processing only with fresh chemistry. More than a 1-stop push is not recommended.

Push processing limitations

Push processing can increase contrast, grain, color shifts, and density problems. It can help in some underexposure situations, but it is not a magic fix for badly underexposed film.
